Website Design Guide: 10 Tips for Business
Use an illustrative exporter website to check the offer, product information, enquiry path, mobile use and launch handover.
Short answer
Illustrative brief: an exporter has a homepage saying “Quality Solutions”, products without model numbers and a contact page with one message box. Start by naming the products, add the information needed to check fit, then carry the product context into the enquiry. The ten checks below follow that path.1–2. Write the hero around a product and a buyer task.
For the illustrative packaging exporter, replace “Quality Solutions” with “Paper packaging for retail brands, with custom sizes and print options”. The product, audience and options give a buyer something to evaluate. The business must approve those facts; this is a copy example, not a client result.
Write down the task: find suitable packaging, check the specification, then request a sample or quote. A product-category link can be the main hero action, with contact as a second route.
3–4. Turn “Solutions” into categories buyers can choose.
Sketch Home, Product categories, one representative product, About and Contact. Add a page when its information or buyer task differs, rather than to fill a package.
The category answers “which type?”; the detail answers “will it fit?”. A carton page might organize model, dimensions, material, print options, minimum quantity and a data sheet. Mark unknown details for approval instead of filling gaps with sales copy.
5–6. Carry the product information into the enquiry.
Place a relevant data sheet or approved project beside the product. Certificates need a holder and scope; independent concepts need an explicit label.
An enquiry can retain the selected model and ask for quantity, destination and a reply channel. Confirm the fields with the receiving team, then test errors, visitor feedback and receipt. A prepared email draft must say that it has not been sent.
7–8. Test the longest content on mobile and with a keyboard.
Choose the product with the fullest specification. Check long model names, the table, document links and enquiry fields. Short placeholder text is a poor layout test.
Enlarge the text and tab through links and fields. Check focus, labels, contrast and whether an error preserves the entered information. Turn each observed obstacle into a current-result and expected-result task.
9–10. Hand over one release checklist.
List titles, descriptions, canonical URLs, sitemap entries, relevant internal links and any old-to-new URL redirects. Record live spot checks rather than marking a vague “SEO complete” box.
Name the content approver, release owner, account owner, editing method and support period on the same list. Follow one real product from category to document to enquiry before approving launch. These are design and acceptance steps, not a ranking or sales guarantee.
The practical checklist
- Name the primary audience and the decision the website needs to support
- Write a one-sentence offer before choosing the hero layout
- Map the smallest useful page hierarchy and navigation
- Place services, products, or practice areas in language customers recognize
- Use only verifiable projects, credentials, testimonials, and other proof
- Design the contact or inquiry path around the information the team needs next
- Review real copy and images in responsive layouts before development is complete
- Check contrast, headings, keyboard use, form labels, and meaningful image alternatives
- Prepare titles, descriptions, canonicals, structured data, sitemap, and redirects where needed
- Assign responsibility for testing, launch approval, analytics, handover, and future updates

Website design guide questions
Practical answers before a business website project starts
Can design start before all product information is ready?
Start with the page structure, but list the missing models, specifications, photos and documents with an owner. Do not treat placeholder copy as approved product facts.
How should a five-page first release be divided?
Choose a complete task path, such as Home, Product categories, one representative product, About and Contact. If products need separate explanations, agree the first-release priorities rather than squeezing everything into one page.
When is a design ready for development?
Walk through the main path with real, approved text and images. Check long headings, specifications, mobile layouts and form states, then record the remaining issues and approver.
